The Tyngsborough-Dunstable Historical Society, the Dunstable Rural Land Trust, and the 350 Committee have joined forces to honor our farming tradition by presenting an afternoon of demonstrations and hands-on opportunities to see and experience the life of  farmers throughout our 350 year history!

On Saturday afternoon, August 19, a number of events will take place at the McLoon Barn and The Little Red Schoolhouse on route 113 from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m. Visitors will be able to sample the following activities:

  • Get “up close and personal” with cows, sheep, goats, and other farm animals …
  • Witness a sheep herding demonstration with a dog guided only by a shepherd’s whistle to gather the sheep in the meadow and guide them from place to place…
  • Make apple cider…
  • Wash the laundry as it was done long before electricity and washing machines and dryers…
  • Sign the “Declaration of Independence” with a goose quill pen…
  • Prepare the winter’s supply of cordwood by cutting logs with a two-man saw…
  • Try out colonial carpentry using hand tools to build benches of old barn beams…
  • Sample the art of making quilts for those long cold winter nights…
  • Hear the music that was played in our community more than 100 years ago…
  •  Learn to weave and produce a product we still use today…
  • Make clay marbles and enjoy a game…
  • Talk to a “real” Minuteman as he struggles to decide whether to stay on his farm to feed and protect his family or to march with his militia unit (leaving from Kendall’s Tavern) to defend his community and way of life against the British …
  • Work with a tinsmith to make a candle lantern …
  • See and learn about the tools used and MADE in Dunstable

Or simply wander at will as this old style of life unfolds before you…

This is an afternoon designed to help children and adults understand a bit better the strength of character it took to be a farm family in Dunstable.
