Bicycle Safety Recommendations

  • Please wear your bicycle helmet. At least 75% of most serious bicycle injuries are caused by an injury to the head.
  • Always follow the "rules of the road." Bicycles are subject to some of the same traffic regulations as motor vehicles.(M.G.L 85B)
  • Riding more than two abreast is dangerous and discouraged.
  • Consider attaching a bicycle flag to your bicycle which will increase your visibility from a distance.
  • A safety checklist should be completed prior to riding. Bicycle reflectors and proper bicycle lighting are a necessity for unavoidable night riding.
  • Avoid riding during peak rush hours and on busy roadways which may increase your risk of a bicycle accident. Most bicycle accidents occur between the hours of 4:00pm and 7:00pm.
  • Please practice courtesy while riding and enjoy.

During warm weather months, officers will randomly be assigned to the rail trail and other highly frequented conservation properties. In addition to illegal dumping violations, officers will be enforcing liquor and drug violations. It is our hope that through occasional random police patrols, these areas will remain safe and enjoyable areas for family recreation. Residents are welcomed to call this office with any information concerning the enforcement and protection of conservation areas.
