TIMBER CUT Site Walk with Forester September 20th, 10AM

The Dunstable Conservation Commission harvests timber on some of our properties -- and a cut is proposed to occur on the Spaulding Proctor Reservation off Pleasant and Groton Street this late fall-winter season.  An additional smaller cut at the Farnsworth Wildlife Refuge, off of Westford Street, will also occur. Timber cuts are performed in conjunction with a Forest Cutting Plan submitted and approved by the State of Massachusetts, whereby best management practices are used.  Working with licensed foresters, harvesting is accomplished in a way that protects critical areas and improves conditions for wildlife.  Timber to be harvested has been marked and is set back from the walking trails.

Timber cuts maintain long-term forest health by preventing overcrowding, encourages regeneration of the forest by allowing more sunlight exposure and air circulation to reach the undergrowth, and helps keep the spread of invasive non-native plant species from smothering native species and altering the eco system.  A healthy forest helps prevent catastrophic insect outbreaks and protects and enhances wetlands and water quality.

A community timber harvest site walk to the Spaulding Proctor Reservation, with the Forester Gary Gouldrup (MA LF#810), will occur on Saturday, September 20th at 10am, at the Town Hall, 511 Main Street, Dunstable, MA .  Gary will present an overview of the cutting plan before the group caravan in their own personal vehicles to the Spaulding Proctor Reservation together.  Parking for the site walk will be at the Larter Memorial Field area which is a short walk from the property.
