During the Civil War, men from Dunstable served alongside the 54th Massachusetts Infantry, a Black regiment known for their bravery at the Battle of Fort Wagner in 1863. Among those from Dunstable were Privates Willard M. Mayo and George E. Marshall, who served with the 7th New Hampshire Infantry. Mayo was killed in the assault, and Marshall was wounded and captured, later dying from his injuries.
