Annual & Special Town Meetings
The purest form of democratic governing is practiced in a Town Meeting. In use for over 300 years and still today, it has proven to be a valuable means for many Massachusetts taxpayers to voice their opinions and directly effect change in their communities. Here in this ancient American assembly, you can make your voice heard as you and your neighbors decide the course of the government closest to you. In Dunstable, the Annual Town Meeting is held on the second Monday in May, at 7pm at Swallow Union Elementary School.
What's the Difference Between Annual and Special Town Meetings?
Each town must hold an annual Town Meeting. Additional Town Meetings are called special meetings. They may be called as many times during the year as necessary.
While most of the time town meetings are called by the Select Board under a warrant, voters may call a special Town Meeting. Two hundred registered voters or 20% of the total number of registered voters, whichever is less in number, may request a special Town Meeting. The special Town Meeting must be held no later than 45 days after the Select Board receive the request.
