Railroads and Quarries Hike

Event Date:
Sunday, May 7, 2023 - 2:00pm to 4:30pm

Address

Swallow Union School Dunstable, MA 01827
United States

On this story telling hike, you will learn how to spot abandoned railroad beds, learn how mining and shaping granite blocks was done 150 years ago, climb around in cutting pits and through tunnels (Indiana Jones would be jealous) and even learn some architectural skills. Learn why the distance between rails in the USA and the British Empire is a weird four feet eight and one quarter inches but practically nowhere else. What role did the railroad and Dunstable play in food preservation, high speed communication and even education. Why do barrels bulge in the middle?

This is a family oriented, flat land hike but if young children get tired, there is a “bailout” point. The trail is about one mile long and filled with stops to investigate the “Why” behind what we see.

We will start at the Union School in the center of town on Sunday afternoon May 7 at 2:00pm and return by 4:30pm.
