Post Office

Message from the Postmaster - Mar 07

Happy spring ! With the warm weather coming our way, I ask that all residents check their mail boxes for proper attachment to the ground as well as the mailbox on its pole. Also the house number is always a help when placed on the right outside portion of the mailbox or the outside mailbox lid (this is a great assistance to any replacement carrier filling in for the regular carrier).

With the new year upon us and the weather conditions at its worst please remember to keep clear the immediate area
to your mail box (such as snow and trash containers). The placement of sand leading up to, and just past your mail box also makes a safer approach for the carrier making their deliveries.

24 Hour Automated Info & Services

You can accomplish a lot of basic Post Office business any time you want by calling the USPS General Info & Services line (800-275-8777), or using the USPS website: http://www.usps.com

PO box holders should use PO Box # as mailing address

Dunstable mail is now coming in carrier routed. What this means is that a greater proportion of our mail is already sorted to the routes so there is less manual sorting. If you are a PO BOX holder, you really need to have your mail addressed to you using your PO BOX number. If you use your street address instead of your PO BOX number, it will be sorted to the routes and it can delay your mail getting to your PO BOX.

Packages addressed to 170 Pleasant Street

You may occasionally receive packages with the 170 Pleasant Street address, the address of the Dunstable post office, on them. This is because DHL and UPS address packages to 170 Pleasant St and then the Dunstable postal service delivers them to the other address on the package.

Click'n'Ship Service

Rural postal carriers have started picking up postage paid parcels under a program called Click-N-Ship. You go to the internet and click on USPS.com. There you will see several options including click n ship. You will be able to print postage on the internet, put that postage on a parcel, and while online notify the USPS that you want it picked up by your carrier at no extra charge.

Avoiding Mailbox Theft

Unfortunately, due to sporadic mail thefts, particularly during the winter holidays, the rural carriers will no longer leave packages on mail boxes or any place the package can readily be seen. If the carrier cannot leave a package in your mailbox and s/he knows you may be home, s/he will attempt to deliver your package by blowing the horn of their vehicle, as prescribed for rural delivery. If the carrier cannot deliver a package securely, s/he will leave a slip informing you that the package is at the Post Office. Also as a precaution, do not put outgoing mail in your mailbox overnight.
