August 2008 Senior Citizen All Points Bulletin

SENIOR CITIZEN ALL POINTS BULLETIN                                            August 03, 2008 Hello,  It seems that every time I write my senior article the weather is one extreme or the other.  Today we have another thunder and lightening storm pounding us.  Did you know that lightning strikes the earth 20 million times a year.  Over the past few years I have heard the fire department respond to more and more houses that have been struck by lightning.  It seems that these storms are becoming more and more violent.  The tornado that struck NH this past week is an example of extreme weather that New England is not use to.  Make sure you are prepared for these violent storms.   A great website to check out is maintained by NOAA (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration)  http://www.weather.gov/safety.php .  This website has all kinds of safety information as well as weather alerts.  The local news stations are probably our first thought for severe weather updates, unless we loose power.  NOAA recommends that you keep a NOAA battery operated weather radio on hand.  Another helpful tool to have in case of an emergency is a cell phone.  We all know how the phone service can be around here!!!  During a storm you should keep it near by just in case.  If you do not have a cell phone, I have plenty of Senior E-911 phones.  Just ask me for one at the next luncheon.  Also if you do not have access to the internet, let me know and I’ll look for brochures on a topic that interests you.   Lets move onto a more peaceful topic, the trip to Scupper Jack’s in Acton, MA was wonderful.  The Dunstable Police Local#7 picked up the tab for the Dunstable Seniors.  We had a great time!  I told you that I was going to try the lobster, however the Grilled Filet Mignon caught my eye.  Arlene Silk chose the Scupper Jack’s Lobster Pie, She said it was very good.  To sum it up a good time was had by all.  I can not wait to see where we choose to go next year.   Oh, I have one final rant.  This topic really chaps me !!!  I know we have a few bargain goers out there who live for the summer yard sales.  You know who you are.  Please just because you see a yard sale it does not mean that the Massachusetts Motor Vehicle Laws are reduced also.  It does not allow you to stop and park right in the middle of the road.  Please find a safe place to pull OFF the road and use caution when you open your door and make way to the dollar table.  If you are having a yard sale make sure you have plenty of room for parking.  If you do not have room for parking, team up with a friend who has a better location.  Anyways that’s my Rant on yard sales.   Until I see you again,  Darrell Gilmore,Sergeant DPD
