This month’s article provides safety tips for socializing on line. The information contained in this months article is provided through the Federal Trade Commission. Although socializing on line can be entertaining and informative, readers are reminded to consider the following Federal Trade Commission safety tips:
01. Keep your information to yourself. Do not post your full name, social security number or credit information
02. Make certain your screen name does not tell too much about you, such as your name, age or hometown
03. Post only the information you are comfortable with others seeing and knowing about you.
04. Consider not posting a photo. The photo can be altered or broadcast in ways you may not want.
05. Be cautious if a new online friend wants to meet you in person. Do your research and learn if the person is known by others. If you decide to meet, the meeting should be in a public area with friends you trust. Tell others when you expect to be back Etc.
06. Trust your gut if you are suspicious. Report the incident if you feel threatened or uncomfortable.
A pamphlet listing further educational internet safety tips may be obtained at the Dunstable Police Department. Parents are always encouraged to discuss internet safety with children. The Federal Trade Commission provides an entertaining and easily understood internet site for parents and children to learn more about internet safety. The site is called the “Internet Keep Safe Coalition” at www.iKeepSafe.org. Please take the time to browse the site with your children.
Enjoy the nice weather, and please remain safe!
