Dunstable is a town of approximately 3,000 residents in 1100 households that is currently operating on a $6.1 million budget with $1 million in excluded debt expense.
Dunstable is proud of its lean operations. Seven full-time police officers, a part-time fire chief, a two-man highway department, and handful of part-time employees at the town hall and library work hard to provide the basic services that residents need. There are also many volunteers, including a number of volunteer fire fighters, who donate their time for the benefit of the community.
Dunstable's 17 square miles in close proximity to commercial development in Nashua provide limited opportunity for commercial development. Although the town has designated business, industrial, and mixed use districts, most of the town's businesses operate under special permits. The town's expenses are largely supported by local property taxes, supplemented by a small amount of state aid.
